This could very easily end up being a cliché post about how amazing my kids are, but I’ll try and keep myself in check. We often look at parenting as guiding children through life, helping them grow and thrive. But, we as adults could (re-) learn a lot from those young minds!
As we grow up, we get used to so many facets our world, often losing view of the strange and wonderful things we have started taking for granted. One of my first memories is of looking at the night sky being amazed by the pattern formed by the clouds and stars. Only recently I have rediscovered this feeling of wonder and awe with the help of my 6-year-old son. His questions and astonishment about our solar system are just inspiring!
My daughter isn’t very different, she can just keep asking “Why?” for days on end. It might seem a simple question at times, but just think about it; “Why should I do it that way? “(she can be a challenge ;) ). Our routine might be logical, but isn’t there another way to go about things?
This feeling of wonder and inquisitiveness is what helps them flourish, we as parents need only steer this. Why then, do so many of us lose these two major motivators?
It is quite easy to do; simply sit down, look up and wonder…”Why?”.
Recently did this myself. I really enjoyed my part-time position as a radiographer, mostly because I could be of positive influence on someone’s hospital visit. However, because I only did this for one day a week it was hard to delve into the depths and satisfy my inquisitiveness. Even though it pains me I decided to offer my dismissal. I will miss the work and team, but it has already started to open a wealth of new knowledge for me.
My point is not that everyone should simply quit their job or be an unfounded critic. I would however like everyone to question something occasionally, could the situation be different? If so; How would you go about making it so? Act like a child, look at is as if you’ve never seen it before.
Do something you haven’t done before, be amazed, dream about the future…
